Back to the McCarthy preview pages: anyone who was reading British comics in the mid-eighties (2000AD, CRISIS, DEADLINE, REVOLVER) will remember Brendan's Artoons with some affection. Here's a page from SOLO #12 that'll remind you of that era, when comics were electric with experimentation, and McCarthy was leading the field in the UK at bringing fine art influences into the medium. Anyone lucky enough to have seen a copy of SWIMINI PURPOSE will also note the similarity of this page to the montages he and Brett Ewins produced at art school. The dialogue here, together with the other pages I've seen so far, tell me that this could be the most politically polemic comic I've seen from DC in twenty odd years. Every piece seems to be rich in one subtext: America's going to hell in a handcart.
