The exhibition contains a selection of figurative masterpieces from the Classical world. There are some 200 objects, all of particular artistic, documentary or historical value, revealing the roots of our civilization which is closely linked, from a cultural and social perspective, to the natural world and the environment.
The exhibition is based on figurative works that have drawn inspiration from various aspects of nature, the landscape and man’s modelling of nature.
The masterpieces on display come from Greece, Magna Graecia, Rome and Pompeii, and are on loan from major national and international museums.
Painted vases, terracotta votive offerings, frescoes and luxury items such as silverware and gold trinkets are all decorated with motifs linked to fauna and flora, representing forests and marine and coastal scenes and, for the first time, splendid animated landscapes.
The visitor is thus guided through a speculative, figurative itinerary which Greek culture and then the Hellenistic and Roman worlds elaborated with regard to Nature and which to this day forms the basis of modern Western culture.
The exhibition project stems from the scientific collaboration between the universities of Milan and Salerno and the Archaeological Department of Naples, the institution promoting the show along with the Municipality of Milan and the Special Department for Pompeii.
Gemma Sena Chiesa and Angela Pontrandolfo are the scientific curators of the exhibition, produced by Mondadori Electa.
The exhibition is hosted at the Palazzo Reale in Milan and will run through January 10, 2016.
